From an 'anonymous ' source:

Some of my abiding memories are from using the more interesting ones like counterspell. Having just got it I remember encountering the Balrog as we were sneaking back up the tunnel to see if the players that had been trapped by it in the cave were alive or dead. One quick shout of counterspell saved our asses and Jon and I decided running back out of the tunnel was the prudent thing to do!

On the succubus adventure again, we had a big set piece encounter in the railway tunnel at the end of day 1 (Montana still alive at that point!) She was seducing and intimidating the party to obey her wishes. When I refused a command to kneel the result went something like this ...
Fire Dart ..... Counterspell
Fireball ..... Counterspell!
Fire Blast ..... Couterspell!!
FIRE STORM! .... entire party flee from the tunnel then the braver ones block the entrance to watch her entorage roast :p

It's a lot more fun than just being a paramedic!

And:

'Montana is dead (although the party didn't witness it) at the hands of the succubus...he came back as something-else Parthalion because - Typical Toby - he'd spent lots and lots on relife points so he came back at about 60% of his former self, but slanted more toward combat. When Salcor shattered his bones (wrestling over the staff of life, the only thing powerful enough to make Montana take a risk) on the 48 hour the refs allowed me to restore him by pouring power points into healing him. I didn't have any regeneration/mending type spells at that point, the character was pretty new back then.'

"Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!"
Just for the record, I was told afterwards that the whole Sucubus encounter was specifically set up to "Get Montana". Even teleporting away just teleported me back to the Sucubus. When you can't rely on your trusty spells, there's little you can do!!
It's just as well I invested in Eternity Points. And it was time for a change, if only to get the "goody goody" party off my back for prematurely killing a gate guard goblin that they would no doubt have hacked into small pieces later anyway.

Outrageous! Tell me who told you it was a set-up and I'll see to them! I'm guessing this was after I stopped running them 'cos any attempts to 'get Montana' while I was around usually resulted in a dust cloud on the horizon :)

You're right Mark, it was after you'd hung up your boots. It was during demi-god Mike's days, and I believe the sucubus was his partner in crime Theresa? Dare I say they had to resort to "cheating" to get me though! :) (ie bu88ering up my spells!)

On a completely different subject, I notice there's some Ghost Lore pics up. Now that was a fun/scary adventure. I'll never forget Ali (Mark's girlfriend) being the psychic and getting "contacted" by Cavendish and saying those unforgetable words "I'm nooo going up there aloone!" I thought it was a stroke of genius when you sent her a christmas card later that year, from cavendish! Somewhere I've got my reports news article write up, I'll try and dig it out.

God don't you hate it when people bend the rules? ;)

Well, the good news is that Teresa may be putting in a guest appearance on one of the events so you may well get a re-match.

Any stuff you have from the Cefn Mably adventure, please scan it and send it to me, I'll put it up on the site.

Phil West's increasingly unreliable memory

1st adventure I took part in: 3rd encounter we lost 1 player due to a ripped open thumb
next encounter 1 more, Jill, to a twisted ankle
final encounter the party were wiped out I.C. but the last to go down was Jill who was still hobbling along using a stick as a crutch and as an improvised shield. Apparently the 1st time that script had resulted in tpk.

Second or third event: Buried under a ton of leaves, burst out, charge the party, fall and twist ankle.

Next event: Returning to Gloucester on my motorbike, in the dark and rain, heading to pick up Piers from the studio I totalled the bike and slid to a halt at the side of a roundabout.

next event: Take one of the monster crew to hospital and then take him home to a not very sympathetic family. Return to the site hours later, kip down overnight in the car.

LRP: the healthy outdoor sport.

:)

One of the last adventures I went on included Piers in the party. He was due to take part in a 24hour(? a long event anyway) the following weekend but was captured by someone who thought it amusing to remove his testicles using a drill, resulting in Piers having go squeaky.

Times were hard back then.

By the time the party reached the point where we found where he was being held prisoner we were down to 2 of us and between us we had 3 legs and 3 arms but we went in and we got him out.

You don't get that kind of dedication from these young whippersnappers you get these days, nosiree. Why I remember a time when...*wanders off mumbling* :)

Hopefully things will be a bit less lethal in and out of character.

Thanks for the replies. Anything is useful so that we can try to recreate the feel properly.

Memories get a little disjointed...

(edit: not sure why but the word p-i-r-a-t-e gets censored here to pir*te so...)

The party was hired to find a pyrate base but we were captured by them, they used some kind of charm spell to take us prisoner. The others were disarmed but the captain said I could keep my blade because being forced to relinquish it could put too great a strain on the charm spell, instead I was compelled to promise not to use it against them.

I cannot recall how things came about but the pir*tes had to leave the cave system that they were using as a base and we travelled through the woods with the captain and his second in command. This was a drow (best drow masks ever!) and he and I had a difference of opinion and he eventually challenged me to a duel, no magic. I pointed out I had given my word not to harm them and he released me from it. We sparred for a while and I was getting the upper hand, mostly because I had a 2h sword not because I'm any good at this stuff. At one point the drow fell back and the captain asked the drow what he thought he was doing, losing. The drow pointed out the problem of the shorter sword and that he couldn't use spells. The captain pointed out "You're a PYRATE".
At that the drow cast an ice dart spell at me, knocking me back. (out of the corner of my eye I caught sight of Steve reminding me, by miming, to act as if I was freezing)
A few seconds later I cast a fire spell back at the drow and charged up to finish him off.

Turns out that the captain had been infected with lycanthropy by the guy who sent us after him (complicated story and I can't be sure of the details. I recall a comment from someone, Steve I think, who said that he liked this script because it could work out quite differently depending on what happened during the adventure) and we eventually tried to help the captain. As the sun started to set the captain started to change. I remember trying to keep the werewolf calm and focussed on tracking down the guy who had done this to him. It seemed to work and we eventually confronted the guy.

Lots of things combine to make adventures memorable. The acting, the costumes, the setting, a chance for an individual moment of heroism.
