Well, it depends on what overall effect you're going for. If they're a rustic finish then I'd be inclined to go for a 2mm spacer and use a buff-stone finish grouting, it balances the look and you get a nice interplay between the tile and the grout.

However, if they're more glossy and contemporary then I'd probably go for a 1mm spacer and stick with a white grout.

yes it is a more contemporary look that we're going for althought the units are a cream shaker style. Im using plain white non textured tiles for a clean effect. however I am torn between 10 by 10 tiles or 15 by 15. slightly larger may even work. I was looking at the rectangular tiles but I think that they look more like public toilet tiles any ideas????

I think the 10x10 vs 15x15 argument depends on the size of the room they're being used in and the area of coverage.

I agree that the rectangular tiles, although seemingly quite popular these days, are reminicent of the London Underground and create an almost Pavlovian response that results in the vague smell of urine whenever you look at them.

Basically I'm seeing how long I can go before Si starts screaming - I think he'll hit the wall pretty soon.

Well I got to the wall, only to find two twunts discussing how they were going to tile it. Like they have any clue on tiling.

My advice is not to base your tile selection only on color and size. Not all ceramic tiles absorb the same amount of water, so you'll need to speak with your tile dealer about the right tile for a shower. “Nonvitreous” is the term for tiles that absorb the most water, and this type of tile should be avoided for showers, tubs and sink countertops. “Semivitreous” tiles are rated for low absorption, and can be used for splash areas.

The shape and size of tile is another option to consider. For flat areas, larger tiles of about 12 inches result in a nice, orderly appearance and are available in a wide range of materials. They can be cut to various sizes and shapes. Installing large pieces of tile can also be considerably easier than installing smaller tile. It simply takes less time to lay fewer pieces in the same amount of space, as opposed to an option such as mosaic tile. Mosaic is a good tile for small or curved areas because it is generally no larger than 1- to 2-inch squares. These small tiles can be more easily installed on a curve, because the joints between tiles allow the finished plane of tile to “bend” around problem areas rather than bridge them, which ensures the entire rear surface of the tile is securely anchored in mortar. Mosaic tiles are available with or without a moisture-resistant glaze.

So in conclusion pir*tes are like tiling for many reasons.

Oh and to get us back on the caption contest...

The crew of the Crimson Rag all lined up to discuss their tiling ideas

(Yes I know its sh*t but it does bring us back on track AND it is about tiling - me, I am a bloody marvel)

and don't forget boys and girls, remember to find the centre of the wall and tile to the edges. this way you get two symmetrical cuts on either wall. having one full tile on one side and one cut tile on the other gives a less aesthetically pleasing finish.

good point mr blacklung. also to achieve a more symetrical finish i suggest placing batons a set amountaway from the edge of the wall and tiling to these, as walls are very often not straight. by using the batons as a straight edge you achieve a more uniform overall finish.
